Invisible in This Visual World? Work and Working Conditions of Female Photographers in the Global South

Recent studies have shed light on the masculine nature of doxa that underpins field photography. Other explored patterns inequity faced by local-foreign photographers in Global South who straddle a transnational photography within which actors from North and collaborate but residual economic symbolic power remain with agents institutions centred North. This study draws upon extends both these lines inquiry through exploring professional experiences 20 female-identifying based 18 countries across four different geo-cultural regions South. The article discusses their marginalisation as marked three broader themes: precarity, isolation invisibility/partial visibility. Through this, highlights how gender-based exclusions shown to be inherent national fields may understood additionally intersected what is recognised cosmopolitan capital photographic practice.
